SUDS covers 100% of the cost for eligible servicemembers to complete an SDI (Scuba Diving International) or PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) open-water certification — including instruction, equipment rental, dive fees, and printed certification cards. No out-of-pocket expenses, no hidden fees.
Step 1: Check Eligibility
SUDS serves active-duty and veteran servicemembers with a permanent physical disability, particularly those injured during service. You do not need a specific VA rating or documented disability classification to apply — a conversation with a SUDS coordinator is all that's needed to determine eligibility.
Step 2: Contact SUDS
Call 210-303-2181 or use the contact form. A program coordinator will respond within 48 hours to discuss your background, any physical considerations, and the next available session that fits your schedule.
Step 3: Complete the Knowledge Development Phase
SDI and PADI certifications include an online or workbook-based knowledge component covering dive physics, physiology, and safety procedures. SUDS provides access to the required digital course at no cost. Most participants complete this phase in 4–6 hours over one or two evenings.
Step 4: Confined Water Training
Pool sessions are conducted with a 1:1 instructor-to-participant ratio. SUDS instructors are SDI-certified and experienced with adaptive techniques for amputees, spinal cord injuries, and limited-mobility participants. Pool sessions typically require 2–3 visits of 2 hours each.
Step 5: Open Water Checkout Dives
Four open-water checkout dives complete the certification. SUDS typically conducts these at Virginia Beach or in conjunction with Key Largo and Cozumel event trips. Upon completion, participants receive a recognized SDI or PADI certification card accepted at dive shops worldwide.
