Adaptive Sports as a VA-Recognized Benefit
The VA Adaptive Sports Program, administered under 38 CFR Part 17, allocates funding annually to adaptive sports organizations nationwide. In FY2026, the VA distributed over $10 million in grants to MOVE UNITED-member organizations — of which SUDS is a proud affiliate — specifically to cover programming costs for eligible veterans at no charge.
Who Qualifies
Veterans with a service-connected disability rating of 20% or greater, or with a permanent physical impairment that limits participation in standard sports, qualify for VA adaptive sports referrals. Active-duty servicemembers with documented injuries also qualify under the Military Adaptive Sports Program.
How to Get a Referral to SUDS
- Contact your VA primary care provider or physical medicine team and request an adaptive sports referral
- Ask specifically for a referral to aquatic adaptive sports or MOVE UNITED-affiliated programs
- Contact SUDS directly at 210-303-2181 — we work directly with VA liaisons at Walter Reed, Brooke Army Medical Center, and several VA medical centers
Recreation Therapy Reimbursement
Veterans can also pursue reimbursement through VA recreation therapy programs. Dive certification costs, equipment fees, and travel for approved adaptive sports events may be covered under Chapter 31 Vocational Rehabilitation or specific adaptive sports grant provisions. Consult with a VA benefits counselor for individual eligibility determinations.
SUDS Is Free — No Referral Required
While we encourage veterans to explore all available VA benefits, SUDS programs are 100% free of charge to eligible participants regardless of VA referral status. All costs are covered by charitable donations. No documentation is required to apply — only a demonstrated service-connected disability.
