Veteran Rehabilitation Through Sport: Five Servicemembers, Five Transformations

The research is clear: adaptive sports have measurable benefits for wounded veteran rehabilitation — reduced PTSD symptom severity, improved physical conditioning, enhanced social connection, and a renewed sense of identity beyond injury. But the research doesn't capture what it feels like to surface from your first SUDS dive, or to stand at the top of a rock face you were told you'd never climb.

These five SUDS participants do.

SSG (Ret) Marcus T. — Adaptive Diving

"I had a TBI and PTSD. Water has always been unpredictable for me. But underwater, everything is quiet. The hypervigilance just... stops. SUDS gave me an exit from the noise." — SSG (Ret) Marcus T., US Army, 2025 SUDS Participant

CPT (Ret) Alicia R. — Adaptive Rock Climbing

"I lost my right hand in an IED blast. Climbing with a prosthetic was something I never thought I'd do. My SUDS guide didn't think about my prosthetic. He thought about the route. That changed everything." — CPT (Ret) Alicia R., US Army, 2024 SUDS Climbing

PO2 (Ret) David K. — Adaptive Skiing

"I'm a bilateral below-knee amputee. The bi-ski program at SUDS put me on a slope I've wanted to ski since I was eight years old. My wife watched the video of my first run about forty times. So did I." — PO2 (Ret) David K., USN, 2026 SUDS Winter Classic

SFC (Ret) James W. — Adaptive Hiking

"After my spinal fusion, they told me I'd be lucky to walk flat ground. SUDS put me on eight miles of Appalachian trail. I want to do twice that next year." — SFC (Ret) James W., US Army Rangers, Spring 2026 SUDS Hike

LCpl (Ret) Sofia M. — Adaptive White Water Rafting

"My therapist suggested SUDS. I thought she was joking. I've now done two rafting events and I'm applying for the Cozumel dive. SUDS changed the arc of my recovery." — LCpl (Ret) Sofia M., USMC, 2026 New River Gorge Rafting

The Common Thread

Across five sports, five branches, and five different injuries, the SUDS effect is consistent: when veterans are treated as athletes rather than patients, something fundamental shifts. Learn more about each of our adaptive sports programs and how to apply.
