SUDS White Water Rafting Spring 2026: New River Gorge Event Recap
On May 3–4, 2026, twelve wounded servicemembers descended the rapids of the New River Gorge in West Virginia as part of the SUDS spring adaptive rafting event. The 8-mile stretch included Class III and IV rapids adapted with modified equipment and two certified adaptive rafting guides per boat.
Event Highlights
Adaptive Modifications for White Water
Adaptive white water rafting requires thoughtful equipment modification. SUDS worked with the rafting outfitter to provide:
- Stabilizing straps and modified seating for lower-extremity amputees
- One-arm paddle configurations and bracing systems for upper-extremity amputees
- Enhanced communication protocols for participants with TBI or hearing impairment
- Certified Wilderness First Responder on every boat
"That last Class IV rapid, I screamed the whole way through — not from fear, but from pure joy. I haven't felt that alive in years." — PFC (Ret), USMC, New River Gorge 2026
